Boya Chinese (博雅汉语)

Another popular material for learning Chinese is Boya Chinese, which is compiled by a group of experienced teachers from Peking University. This learning material is divided into four proficiency levels (elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate and advanced). In total, this series has a total of nine books which is equivalent to a four-year college study. Boya Chinese uses structure, situation and function theory in context to help students easily gain basic knowledge in the language.

With Boya Chinese, two volumes are alloted for elementary level, with a total of 50 lessons and covering about 1,000 words. This level is compatible with HSK level 3. The pre-intermediate and intermediate levels are also comprised of two volumes each and are designed for students with a vocabulary of 1,000 to 3000 and 3,000 to 5,000, respectively. The pre-intermediate level is compatible with HSK levels 5-6, while the intermediate level with HSK levels 7-8. The final and advanced level has three volumes containing a vocabulary of about 8,000 words. It focuses on identifying synonyms, common sentence patterns and difficult words. This level prepares students for HSK level 11 tests.

  1. These books are by far the most interesting among the books I’ve already studied. They are actually fun to read. Boya Chinese is clearly well-thought and carefully edited. It also touches on a wide variety of topics, including day-to-day life. As far as vocabulary and other language stuff is concerned, all is well.
